We introduce the concept of lean value streams and show how value is created end to end in a (software) company. Then show how each value stream includes a good number of non-value adding activities from the customer’s standpoint, and introduce Mary Poppendieck’s lean software wastes. A good number of practices and stories are shared on how teams can use the value stream mapping technique and visualize waste in their daily work, on a waste grid etc. Then, the game Lean Lens is introduced, which is shared under creative commons, and designed to help teams “see waste” – identify waste in their software development lifecycle and a possible improvement backlog.
